Road Trips
A collection of places to explore in the car this year!
The Finger Lakes
While Upstate New York itself is lovely, the Finger Lakes region, a group of eleven long, narrow, roughly north-south lakes, specifically shines because of its wine roots.
The Finger Lakes produce wines to rival those you’ll enjoy in California and you can find plenty to go around during a Finger Lakes road trip. Just make sure you practice safety first and either take it slow or get a designated driver to show you around the area’s best sipping spots and scenic sites.
The region stretches about 80 miles from east to west and 50 miles north to south with beautiful views of waterfalls and gorges to rolling hills to miles of spectacular shoreline around 11 glacial lakes and one Great Lake.
New York City, New York
There’s plenty to see and do in New York City! The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here — Broadway is back! Shopping and dining venues are open across the city, and some museums — like The Metropolitan Museum of Art — have finally opened their doors again. Of course, you’ll want to grab some coffee and stroll through the iconic park to soak in the skyline views. Red Roof is here for you when you're ready to start traveling again.
Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah National Park on the East Coast is a prime spot for some beautiful views. You’ll want to take the park’s Skyline Drive for plentiful outlooks and photo ops while driving on your road trip.
Skyline Drive is the only public road in Shenandoah National Park, and it will bring you to 75 overlooks where you can gaze out at a dramatic display of colors. It stretches for a hundred miles over a wide range of elevation heights and takes at least three hours, though you may want to get out and do a little exploring too. There are 500 miles of trails with dense forests, ancient caves, towering mountains, mist-enshrouded waterfalls and lots more to see.
Asheville, North Carolina
Nestled in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has everything you could want in weekend getaway.
The quaint downtown area is filled with unique shops, galleries, breweries, and restaurants, and you’re almost guaranteed to see some local street performers as you wander around. Go for a hike in nearby Pisgah National Forest to spot beautiful waterfalls, or take a scenic drive through part of the park to take in the beauty without working up a sweat. The Biltmore Estate is another popular Asheville attraction worth visiting; this Gilded Age mansion is the largest privately owned house in the U.S., complete with gardens and a winery.
Green Mountain Byway
While road-tripping this year, head to Vermont for all things seasonal. You’ll want to drive the Green Mountain Byway. While this little stretch of road is only 11 miles, make sure to take your time. The Green Mountain Scenic Byway is located in the center of the state close to Orlando, VT, but feels far from the bustle of city life. With its rolling hills and rural charm, Green Mountain Scenic Byway is a place known for wildlife sighting, historical small towns, and outdoor recreation.
However, the short distance means that this road trip is one you can knock out over a weekend visit, perfect if you can’t get away from work for too long this season. Don’t forget to make pit stops for all the amazing New England food and farm activities that pop up this time of year.
